🐄 What Is a Herd Share?
In Oregon, the retail sale of raw (unpasteurized) milk is restricted. One way families obtain raw milk is through a herd share agreement.
A herd share is a private arrangement between a farm and its members. Members purchase a small ownership interest (a "share") in the dairy herd. Because members are partial owners of the animals, they are entitled to receive a portion of the milk produced by the herd.
🌿 How It Works
-
1Purchase a Herd Share
Members purchase a one-time ownership share in the herd. Each share entitles you to ½ gallon of milk per week.
-
2Boarding and Care Fee
The farm cares for the animals on behalf of herd owners — feeding, milking, pasture management, housing, and general animal care. Members pay a regular monthly boarding fee for these services.
-
3Receive Your Portion of Milk
As a herd owner, you receive a portion of the milk produced by the herd. Milk is not sold by the gallon — it is distributed to herd share members as their share of the herd's production.
🔒 Member-Only Distribution
Milk from the herd is available only to registered herd share members who have signed a herd share agreement with the farm. It is not available for retail sale or public purchase.
⚠️ Raw Milk Notice
Raw (unpasteurized) milk has not been pasteurized and may contain naturally occurring bacteria. Individuals with weakened immune systems, pregnant women, young children, and elderly individuals should carefully consider the potential risks associated with consuming raw milk. By participating in a herd share, members acknowledge that they are choosing to receive raw milk from animals they partially own.
